Modernizing the operating system of a local automobile repair shop

Car Doc's project is more than a visual website redesign. It is a careful modernization of the software, workflows, and historical records behind daily shop operations.

01 · Overview

A focused system for the work behind every repair

Car Doc is a small automobile repair business. PlumWorks has been rebuilding its long-running shop-management workflow as a modern cloud application, connecting internal operational tools with public customer-contact workflows.

The work is grounded in the way the shop already operates. The goal is not to impose a generic process, but to make established business rules clearer, more maintainable, and easier to use.

02 · The existing environment

Years of useful history in a Windows application

The existing shop-management application contains important customer, vehicle, repair, invoice, payment, and accounts-receivable history. Staff depend on both the records and the behavior built around them.

Replacing a system like this requires understanding what its screens do, what its data means, and where day-to-day practice has grown beyond the original design.

03 · The challenge

Modernize without losing the logic that keeps the shop moving

A new interface is only useful if the numbers, records, and next steps remain trustworthy.

Historical financial behavior and reconciliation require particular care. Calculations for labor, parts, tax, shop supplies, invoices, payments, and receivables need to be understood in context—not merely copied field by field.

Trace how a customer request becomes a repair order, estimate, invoice, payment, and historical record.

06 · Preserving business history

Migration is part of the product work

Legacy data migration is being approached as a structured translation. Records must retain their meaning and relationships when they move into a different application model.

That includes reviewing source data, mapping entities and historical states, validating totals, and making reconciliation visible when legacy behavior does not map cleanly to the new system.

07 · Current status

An active modernization project

The Car Doc application is being modernized and has not been presented here as fully launched. Core capabilities have been implemented while workflow validation, historical-data work, and production readiness continue.

08 · What this demonstrates

Small-business software can be focused without being simplistic

This work demonstrates PlumWorks' approach to operational modernization: understand the business, preserve meaningful history, connect daily workflows, and build a system that can remain understandable over time.

It also shows why replacing aging software is not simply a matter of recreating screens. The hard and valuable work is preserving intent while making the system better suited to the business ahead.
